The Fiat 501 went into production in May 1915 to replace the Fiat Zero, until 1918 it was largely produced only in a military version intended for the Army.
In 1919 they presented a civilian version at the Turin Motor Show, redesigned by the lawyer Carlo Cavalli. In total, there were about 1,000 produced in the military version and over 47,600 in the civilian version. They went out of production in 1926. About 26,000 copies were by Bertone from 1919 to 1926. The engine was a 1460 cc, 4 cylinder with 23 hp at 2600 rpm and could reach a maximum speed of 70 km/h.
Another 2614 S (sport) versions were equipped with 3.5 L engines with 101 hp at 3000 rpm. This car is of particular importance to Fiat because it was an answer to the American made Ford attempt to invade the European market. Not only in 1919 Italy but also in other European nations, this was in fact a difficult time and post-war industries were struggling to recover. In this time of opportunity for the Ford company, Henry Ford was planning the conquest of these markets over the Atlantic by focusing on the import on his model "T". The European market had therefore a need of a study, competitive model like the "501"; the French Citroën 10HP type A was one of them. It was then the "501" appealed more to the needs and taste of the Europeans.
